Introduction

The funerals of those killed defending the Revolution provided unique and powerful opportunities to unify support for the cause and create revolutionary ritual. This photograph shows crowds of people observing a funeral procession for longshoreman who died defending the Soviet in Vladivostok from Allied interventionist forces in 1918.
